I know that I am a little behind on writing this post or a lot behind, but nonetheless it is 2010 and so New Years 2010 in Zanzibar must be documented properly. A family friend of Anand’s, who is working with the Clinton Foundation in Zanzibar, organized the celebrations. In total, a group of around 25 Americans working in Rwanda, Malawi, Tanzania, and Zambia all met in Stone Town, Zanzibar and commuted an hour north to Kwendwa Rocks. Kwenda Rocks has a monthly New Moon party, but for New Years it was a combined New Moon/New Years Party.
Though I got a bout of stomach flu on new year’s eve and day (the sickest I’ve been in Tanzania yet), I tried to practice a little mind over matter and ended having a memorable New Years Eve in Zanzibar. New Year’s Eve consisted of sitting around at the beach, snorkeling on some reefs off of the coast, sparkelers, glow sticks, dancing, good music, amazing fireworks, bonfires, and a lot of people on the beach. Since I wasn’t feeling well, my night ended with leaving shortly after midnight. Everyone’s else night ended when an idiotic person let off a tear-gas bomb around 1:30am in the midst of the crowd of people, causing them to run either into the water or back to the lodge. Happy 2010! - a sun set on the completion of another year
- last zanzibari sunset of the new year
- heralding in the new year
- New decade-Here we come!
