Sights around town
-
-
Dala dalas on a not-so-busy road
-
-
A typical scene – transport workers and street sweepers (not the safest jobs in town). I always fear for the street sweepers too (mainly women) that stand on the side of busy roads and sweep away the dirt and debris.
-
-
Bicycle rickshaw transporting a couch across town
-
-
Street vendors – selling anything and everything from christmas trees, cashews, dish towels, phone credit, condoms, cigarettes, water, soda, pillows, fly/mosquito zappers, fruit, packaged dinners, childrens’ toys, hats, and even fish!
-
-
The plastics recycling district – the Magomeni Slums (I see this everyday on my bus ride home)
-
-
Recycling for plastic water bottles – people get paid for collecting them from the roads and depositing them here (I think the plan is to one day recycle them, don’t know when that is though)
-
-
The flood plains that run through Dar es Salaam and send the horrid stench of sewage ocean throughout the town. This is my least favorite part of the ride. Shanty towns are built along it. Muhimbili National Hospital and my school are up on the hillside in the far distance.

President Obama. Though his fame has decreased over the last year in Tz, he still is the biggest advertisement face in Dar es Salaam. I can’t tell you how many hair salons that have the face of Obama, Will Smith, and Usher are in Dar es Salaam – too many to count.
